iOS 5.0b1 on iPad Review

Approximately a week ago Apple released its first beta of the long awaited iOS 5.0 . I tried to resist the urge to update my iPad, especially as I was awaiting iphoneislam’s phoneitipad hack to enable full phone finctionality on the iPad 3G; I had no idea if it would work on the iOS 5.0 baseband.

BUT luckily for you dear readers, my inner geek couldn’t but succumb to the urge and I updated my iPad to iOS 5.0 beta 1.

Here’s my initial review. Keep in mind that I will update this blog as I discover new functionalities buried within this release.

N.b: if you decide to jump aboard the iOS 5.0 wagon, be sure to have your iDevice registered with Apple as a developer’s device. Without this you won’t be able to activate your device, and you would be stuck with a useless iDevice 🙂

That said, let’s begin with the review.

As you can see a couple of new native apple apps on the home screen. For the keen eyed who noticed the cydia icon, yup its is already jailbreak-able using the latest release of redsn0w 😉

iMessages

The iMessages is apple’s answer to the ever growing need for a web-based device to device messaging. It functions more or less like RIM’s BBM, whatsapp, gTalk, ping, etc.. No need to further explain its functionality.

You can also notice the brand new keyboard apple has introduced in 5.0 . The keyboard can be vertically dragged and positioned anywhere across the screen, and with an uber cool animation, the keyboard splits into 2, as you can see in the pic above, making it way easier to thumb type. A very welcome addition.

Reminders

To satisfy the ever growing need of its users, apple introduced this reminder/tasks app. It’s pretty much a basic tasks app, and I don’t see why this had its own app, while it could be added to the calendar app.

Notification Center

Another primitive feature gets updated with an all in one notification pull down bar. Just screams ANDROID….

News Stand

All your magazines and newspaper bought from the AppStore will automatically appear under this app. What’s new with this app is that it behaves just like a folder, when clicked it splits down the screen with a shelved background. Haven’t tried this yet, but it promises to be useful.

Safari

Safari also got its share of updates. 2 main tweaks were made to the behavior of tabs; All the tabs can now be accessed from the tab bar, which is always visible and no need for that pesky black screen that showed the tabs in an exposé style. The other tweak is the addition of the “read it later” feature which lets you save any web page for later viewing.

Music App

A whole new GUI for the Music app, nothing new here except for that, and I can’t seem to find the cover flow feature for the albums. Anyone?

Settings

Some minor tweaks in the settings app; what is mostly noticeable is the addition of iCloud and the Home Sharing in mostly all the screens. I am still yet to explore the iCloud feature, and I reckon it will be a while before the Lebanese can fully utilize its features, not until we have a decent Internet connection.

I’ll leave you with the self explanatory screenshots.
